Carnoy's Fluid has been time tested as a fixative of RNA, glycogen, and nissl granules and in most cases is the only choice for fixing these specimens. Carnoy's should never be used when acid-fast bacilli are present. This will cause the bacilli to be non-acid fast. Another thing to be careful of is the fact that Carnoy's Fluid hemolyzes red blood cells and dissolves acid-soluble granules and pigments. Carnoy's Fluid is often recommended when performing a Heidenhain's Aniline Blue-Azan Stain Kit or a Congo Red Amyloid Stain Kit.
