When pathologists are looking for the general or overall picture, the H&E Stain is by far the most popular and consistently requested staining procedure. The H&E Stain is comprised of Hematoxylin and an Eosin Y counterstain, and has been a valuable part of the diagnostic process since 1876. Eosin Y can be used as either an aqueous or ethanolic solution as the counterstain to Hematoxylin. Eosin Y from American MasterTech is an acidic dye that will stain the basic parts of the cell such as cytoplasm, collagen, and basement membranes in a pink to orange color. Eosin Y will also stain red blood cells intensely red.
