Hematoxylin is a widely used nuclear stain that is extracted from the heartwood of the Central America's logwood tree, Haematoxylon campechianum. The freshly cut logwood is colorless, but during atmospheric or chemical oxidation, it becomes dark reddish-brown. This logwood in then processed into Hematoxylin, the lifeblood of histology.
Hematoxylin has been used since 1520 A.D. as a textile dye, but it didn't become important to Histology until three hundred years ago. Robert Hooke reported using this dye as a coloring matter for fluids, but not until 1860 was Hematoxylin used in histological staining.
Harris Hematoxylin, the most commonly used Hematoxylin, is routinely used in regressive methods typically with Eosin as the counterstain. American MasterTech has been proudly making Harris Hematoxylin for over thirty years.
