Zamboni's Fixative is an excellent, general fixative that is commonly used in electron microscopy. Zamboni's Fixative is a phosphate buffered combination of picric acid and paraformaldehyde that penetrates tissue rapidly and optimally preserves tissue. Zamboni’s Fixative is generally used to fix medium-size tissues within one hour.

Zamboni’s Fixative stabilizes cellular proteins, is not easily destroyed by tissue fluids, and will not cause tissue deterioration. This allows specimens that are fixed with Zamboni’s Fixative to be kept at room temperature indefinitely and be sent through the mail without the preservation of the surgical sample being compromised.
